A Discussion by Ibn Taymiyyah

This article by Skeikh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah answers the following questions:

  • Is reason self sufficient for the acquisition of all knowledge?
  • What is the role of revelation in acquisition of knowledge?
  • Within the religious context, should reason be completely suppressed?
  • What about people who completely depend on reason and even discredit the teachings of the prophet?

Power of “Istighfar” (A moving story)
This story about “Istighfar” is from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal, who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam and a famous theologian. Imam Ahmed is also considered to be the founder of the Hanbali school of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and is one of the most celebrated Sunni theologians, often referred to as the “Sheikh ul-Islam” or the “Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah.”

During his old age, while Imam Ahmed was travelling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn’t know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn’t introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people.

A Muslim’s Obligation of Love for Allah

When we love Allah, that love draws us closer to Him and helps us build a strong relationship that can help us in this life and in the hereafter. As Muslims, our faith requires that our love for Allah and his prophet supersedes any other type of love for any other object or creation. Many scholars agree on the basis of sound ahadith that Allah creates a person (and his heart) in such a way that he has the natural inclination to love Allah. However, as a person’s heart gets corrupted by doubts, desires and other temptations, that love has to be rekindled through faith and knowledge.

Love of Allah requires us to love what Allah loves and to dislike what displeases Him and to further demonstrate that love by following the Quran and the Sunnah. This should be a reminder for those of us who merely provide lip service about their love for Allah and His messenger rather than actualizing that love in real behavioral commitments.

Human equality and the liberation of slaves in Islam
The sections of this article are:

1-  How does Islam view slaves?
2-  The liberation of Slaves in Islam.
3-  Can a Slave request his freedom from his Muslim owner?
4-  Conclusion.

The religion of Islam is a very beautiful religion when it comes to human equality and to liberation of slaves.  When Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him brought Islam to his people from Allah Almighty, they used to practice the Judeo-Christian and Pagan slavery.  They used to buy and sell slaves, abuse them, and flog them to death if slaves disobey.  The Muslims had fought long and bloody battles against the Pagan Arabs to liberate slaves and women.
